April: National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month was begun in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets to encourage adults and children alike to discover or rediscover classic poets as well as contemporary writers.  It is a month-long celebration of verse for all ages.

The support and enthusiasm has grown steadily over the 12 years, with readings and events in libraries, schools, bookstore, cultural centers, etc.  We encourage all communities to join in the festivities and create a lifelong love of poetry, be it silly song or Nobel-Prize winning verse.  Winter is finally over; warm up to poetry not just this month but the months of the year.
