August / September: Turning the Calendar Page to School Time gracias senor falker

If your child will attend a new school in the fall, start now to help him/her make the transition.

  • Take a "dry run" trip from home to school.
Fear of the unknown will vanish.
  • Call and make an appointment for you and your child to visit.
Ask if there is an orientation program for new students.
  • Inform yourself of school policies.
    Share them with your child.
  • Join the school’s parent organization.
    Be active, volunteer!
  • Inform your child’s teachers of any special needs your child has.
(eg.: "Maria is allergic to peanuts.")
  • Ask what special themes will be used in the curriculum and begin reading books on those themes with your child now.
This is an important vocabulary builder and will boost comprehension. Your child will excel in class!
  • Learn early about the school bus schedule, and begin now a breakfast schedule compatible with the departure time your child will have on school mornings.
    Be consistent.
  • Make it a point to meet with other parents of children who will be your child’s classmates.
Arrange play dates for your children.
  • Start the school-term bedtime schedule and ritual now.
Prepare clothes, bookbag and school materials for the following day.
  • Read together every day.
A father on our staff adds a fun writing activity to reading time with his son to develop a positive view of the homework to come.
