Lectorum celebrates the works of Gabriel García Márquez with the upcoming release of the movie of Love in the Time of Cholera, starring Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, John Leguizamo, and Liev Schreiber.

García Márquez, perhaps the most famous Latin American author worldwide, was born in Aracataca, Colombia, in 1928, and won the Nobel Prize for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1982.  Also a journalist and screenwriter, García Márquez became known internationally as one of the most important authors of the Latin American Boom.  This generation of writers in the ’60s and ’70s, though loosely defined, used new and experimental techniques such as circular time and the surreal fusion of fantastic and realistic elements called lo real maravilloso, or magic realism.

García Márquez, or “Gabo” among fans, moves readers through the sheer mastery of his storytelling and his vision of the human condition.  While the social and family epic of One Hundred Years of Solitude has been viewed by many as the Latin American novel par excellence, with its history of the now-famous fictional town of Macondo, his novels and stories touch on universal themes such as love, death, the corruption of power, conflicts between the old and the new, and the passionate stories of utterly human characters in all their good and bad qualities.  The most recent novel by García Márquez, who has lived in Paris, New York, and Mexico City, is Memories of My Melancholy Whores, from 2004.

Love in the Time of Cholera is the story of Fermina and Florentina, a couple who, for one reason or another, takes over fifty years to finally get together.  The development of this fascinating story is an inspiring and unforgettable exploration of matters of the heart.
